Hello beauties! Here comes my second post in my mini-series “The Structure of Skin”. This time we’ll be going over the importance of a good Primer. Which is almost as important as the foundation itself!

While moisturizer softens skin, a Primer prepares the skin for your favorite foundation, giving it something to hold on to throughout the day. A Primer creates a protective barrier over skin as well as seals in & protects any products used during you daily skin routine.. basically in seals in the stuff you layered on before. As well as doing their premier job, most Primers have at least one or two other benefits, like blurring, anti-aging, color-correcting, illuminating, pore-minimizing and or mattifying.

I’m going to give you some key tips that could help you find that one that suits you.

Your skin type is the most important factor to take into count when choosing a Primer. All the other “extras” are just that, extras. Skin type:

Oily: When you have oily skin, you need to find an oil controlling or an oil free Primer like Laura Mercier oil free Foundation Primer (https://www.lauramercier.com/prime-the-skin/foundation-primer---oil-free-prod210042.html ) or the famous Benefit’s Porefessional which helps mattify and reduces pores at the same time(https://www.benefitcosmetics.com/us/en/product/porefessional-face-primer )

Dry: One of the problems of dry skin is that it makes makeup flake, so you really have to find yourself a Primer that hydrates a max without being oily. I really like the Marc Jacobs under cover perfection coconut face primer (https://www.marcjacobsbeauty.com/undercover/perfecting-coconut-face-primer/MJ30005.html )because with its concentrated coconut extracts it hydrates the skin without making it to “heavy”.

Combination: It’s a little bit more complicated to find the right one for combination skin. The trick is to find a Primer that hydrates but not too much. I like the Chanel’s Le Blanc (https://www.chanel.com/en_US/fragrance-beauty/makeup-base-le-blanc-de-chanel-138459 ). It has a good balance between hydrating and illuminating (even though it’s oil-free).

If you want or need to have one that is color pigmented as well, here are some basic rules for what color could benefit your skin needs:

Colored primers for different skin tones:

Green: combat redness from rosacea or acne.

Mauve / light purple: counteracts sallow undertones

Pink: helps brighten complexions

Keep in mind that your skin sometime changes with seasons & other condions like jet-lag, warmer or colder climates, change of diets etc... You might need 2 different Primers in your makeup bag.

Always listen to your skin and adjust your skin routine to it!

There is a good Primer out there for everyone, you just have to find the one that suits you the best! Good hunting girls!
