Surviving the Champs -- Masks for Dehydrated Skin
As we see the last bits of summer fading away, many of us are now living with the skin challenges we created from all that fabulous sun, sand, and champagne! Whether you are recovering from the summer blow out party, your last boat trip, airplane hangover, or Fashion Week - everyone can suffer from dehydrated skin.
Dry skin is skin that lacks a natural oil. This is entirely different than dehydrated skin. Dehydrated skin lacks moisture on the surface, due to lifestyle, weather, or internal factors. Unlike dry skin (which is a skin type), dehydrated skin is a reversible skin condition. All skin types – even acneic or oily skin – can experience dehydration of the epidermis. The good news we never have to give up the champagne because we can always treat dehydrated skin to coax it back to health.
Now, on to your dehydrated survival skin skill – choosing the right mask. One of the easiest ways to treat dehydrated skin is to always have the right mask on hand to treat. Cleansing, serums, and moisturizers – sure they all matter and contribute to overall skin appearance and health, but the quickest and easiest way to reverse dehydrated skin is with the right mask. Paper masks, overnight masks, hydrogel masks, silicon masks are everywhere and they all serve a purpose. Keeping these on hand as you travel and return back to a normal routine help transition your skin to a normal state.
Here are some great masks I recommend for helping dehydrated skin
AmorePacific Moisture Bound Sleeping Recovery Mask

Korean brand, AmorePacific is known for their gentle approach to skin. This mask is put on at night after washing and toning. You would not put on a moisturizer for the evening, but can put it on top of serum or moisturizer if you do not mind a heavier feel of the product.
The premise is that as you sleep, you are “recovering” your skin. The mask itself is lightweight but still has a cream feel. It leaves a coat on your face and you do wake up with soft and pump skin. The downside is that you have to let it dry a bit before you lay down and you have to leave it on overnight.
fresh Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask

While not billed as a hydration mask, it works great on getting your skin back to overall health. One of the more unique ingredients in this mask is Belle de Nuit extract. This flower extract helps to promote cell renewal and combat redness – all displays of dehydrated skin. The rest of the ingredients all work towards firming and lightening the skin. This is the perfect mask to use if you have to wake up early and go right back into something. It is thick and creamy, leaving a “coating” on your face for the night. When you wake up, your skin has absorbed all of the mask.
Boscia Tsubaki Oil Deep Hydration Hydrogel Mask

This is hands down one of my favorite go to recovery masks for dehydrated skin and I recommend it anyone. I bring no less It comes in two pieces so if you are really dry but do not want to place it over your mouth because of a particularly cystic outbreak – you can just use the forehead and eye piece. It is inexpensive, easy to use, does not evaporate, and contains some amazing all natural ingredients for hydrating the skin. It has proven results and this mask is one of their most popular products. Quick tip – this mask is amazing for hydrating the skin before a night out or big event. I like to wear around the house before applying make up to give my skin an extra boost of moisture.
Collagena Hydrogel Hydratant Mask

Thora sent me this mask to try and I couldn’t have received a better gift. This heavy hitter is a moisture rich hydrogel mask infused with collagen and hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid is what helps create the immediate effect of plump and healthy skin. Since it is disposable, it is easy to carry for travel and can be a perfect plane pick me up.
One of the quickest ways to know if you are picking the right mask is to pay attention to the key words. Stay away from things like “detoxifying” or “clearing” as they can dry you out. Instead look for “Moisturizing” “Calming/Soothing” and/or “Hydrating” to be in the description. You also want to look for humectant (moisture attracting) ingredients like honey. Another key ingredient to look for with a hydration mask is Hyaluronic Acid.
The most important thing is to know that although your life can cause dehydrated skin, it does not have to last. You can survive – and thrive (and again, never give up the champagne!).
